The Big Bang - A Brilliant New Light
By Paula Edelstein
If you want to hear a great band and have a lot fun at the same time, check out The Big Bang . This group rocks and its members have provided fuel (both touring and sessions) for artists as diverse as Bonnie Raitt, Lenny Kravitz, The Doobie Brothers, Leanne Rimes, Prince, and Sheila E. among others. A profound clue to their musical style can be summed up in one word - innovative. They not only expanded upon the original material, but shed a brilliant new light on some of your favorite songs and didn’t imitate it. Their arrangements and covers of such major hits as “Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love,” “I’ll Take You There,” “Pick Up The Pieces,” and “Ain’t No Sunshine,” featured great blowing by saxophonist Ed Wynne, awesome drumming and vocals from Joey Finger, intense but melodic guitar work with soaring solos by Michael Corcoran and Michael Disanti, along with memorable bass lines and cool keyboards from Koko Powell and Danny Timms respectively. Drummer Joey Finger provided some great percussive and syncopated treatments tonight but it was his scorching vocal rendition of “Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love” that took the evening to new heights. His funky, blues/rock vocals harkened back to the classic Bad Company version but tonight Joey turned it inside out and definitely made this song his own. Everyone in the band sang with the same lust for music and delivered in their own particular style a performance that left you wondering how this one band could posses so much talent and be relatively unknown.
Adding to the fun and musical mood were superior guest performers by vocalist Paul Law - who sang with prayer meeting intensity on “You Better Leave My Girl Alone” and “When Something Is Wrong With My Baby,” and Drake Bell of Nickelodeon’s The Drake and Josh Show - who sang an amazing version of “She Came In Through The Bathroom Window.”
Their chemistry, energy, and music sounded tight and fluid so you’d be wise to get in on the fun and great music they’re throwing down. Check the schedule and make it a point to see this amazingly magical ensemble of players. It will be a night to remember.
